A voltage divider is a tool to divide electrical voltages. Electrical resistors are required for this. They each absorb part of the voltage and transmit it. Short measuring times and high accuracy are the characteristics of voltage dividers. Potentiometers are adjustable voltage dividers where the resistance can be individually configured using a wiper.

One application example of voltage dividers is level adjustment to control the volume in audio devices or amplifiers. Attenuators are used to change the respective voltages and thus the volume. Furthermore, voltage dividers can also be used for (high) voltage measurement, position and angle determination, as well as acceleration measurement. Some of these are attached via potentiometers in technical applications such as industry, medicine and aviation.
